Fort Bragg

We all have our favorite places in the world.  Home is number one.  Whenever Rick and I travel, we love seeing new places and meeting new people.  But within two to three weeks, we’re hankering for home, missing our own bed, living room, kitchen – and, of course, family.  Then, within a few weeks, we’re dreaming about the next place we’d like to explore.

One place draws me back time after time:  Fort Bragg, California.  The Mendocino coastline of California is spectacular and draws people from all over the world.  Most tourists are familiar with Mendocino, a quaint Victorian lumbering town with its tall New England style steeple and rugged coast.  Ten miles north is my favorite northern California seacoast town, Fort Bragg.  (My character, Dynah from The Atonement Child, spends significant time there.) Rick and I have stayed numerous times at the Harbor Lite on the Noyo River.  Every room has a view of the wharf.  We love to watch the fisherman and boats coming in each evening and falling to sleep at the sound of sea lions barking.

A dear friend and missionary from Chile, Colleen Phillips, came for a recent visit, and I wanted to show her one of my favorite towns.  So we drove the scenic Highway 128 through Boonville to the coast and headed north to Fort Bragg.  Over the next two days, we drove around town (love the Victorians and American bungalows), went north to MacKerricher State Park to stroll the boardwalk past rocky bluffs and stretches of tidal pools, and drove south to the Botannical Gardens – 27 acres of gorgeous gardens, not to mention critter sightings.

We spent two days talking, exploring natural vistas (and shops) before it was time to head back.  On the way out of town, I was already thinking about the next time Rick and I will visit.

Where is your ‘great escape’?

My husband and I love to go to Pigeon Forge, TN. The mountains of Tennessee are wonderful and peaceful. Plus, we have family nearby so we get to spend time with them while we relax. It is about seven hours from our house but, when we get the chance, it's our favorite place to go.

Wyoming or the Black Hills, SD!

My husband and I just spent our 5th anniversary there (4 days and 3 nights) and had the greatest time! It was wonderful :)

Ft Bragg is an awesome place - I lived there when I read the Atonement Child (one of my favorite books!) and thought it was so cool that you wrote about FB. BTW, you have a huge following of fans there! The ladies at the Calvary Chapel there introduced me to your books and I've been ever grateful for that! I'm now in Missouri, but Ft Bragg will always have a special place in my heart.

I didn't know there was a Fort Bragg in CA. My son is stationed at Ft Bragg, NC.
My escapes are within the books you have written. I an just getting familiar with your books and have enjoyed what I've read. My daughter and granddaughter live with me. I head to my room at night with a good book to escape everything. Thanks again.
I've passed your book to my mom to read "Her Mother's Hope".

Cambria, California is a lovely little town on the central coast about an hour south on Monterey. In the past it was mainly used for quicksilver mining and fishing, and has more recently become popular for dairy and lumbering. It is relatively undiscovered, but it seems that some Italians have been let in on the secret because in August I heard so many Italian accents that I was able to pretend I was in Italy! My mom and I went into a spa for hot stone massages with stones picked up straight from of the beach where the perfectly formed stones lie in abundance. There is barely any cell service on any cell provider except for those who have Cellular One which makes it feel like a secluded getaway, but in reality the growing city of San Luis Obispo is not very far at all. The view from many of the small, cozy inns consist of not only ocean, but forest and furry critters too. Hearst Castle may also be able to be seen nearby sitting atop a hill in all of its glory. Many of the restaurants take advantage of locally grown olallieberries by baking them into pies and cobblers. A popular place with the locals, Indigo Moon makes the best burgers I have ever had. In a word, Cambria is just plain cute! I don’t think any of the locals have one mean bone in their bodies. I have a feeling there are more people like me bragging about this place, so jump on the bandwagon now before too many people find out about this gem of a town!

Wow, Fort Bragg brings back a lot of memories. I moved from Los Angeles to Elk after high school (back in '77), settled in Albion, worked at the Mendocino Hotel & Ledford House in Little River, did laundry and marketing in Fort Bragg, then moved back to L.A. after 7 years. I have relatives from my grandpa's side of the family in Booneville & Elk. My favorite 'great escape' spot is the four poster bed nestled in my cousin's beautifully landscaped yard in Santa Rosa by Sebastopol. Love to lay there and read! Next would be her outside tub surrounded by lusciousness. I have only been able to do that twice in recent years, but I escape there in my mind very often!

My husband and I have been going to Mission Beach in San Diego for over twenty years. We have seen many sites across Western & Midwest USA but always long for the relaxing times we have at Mission Beach. We go during the off season when the crowds are gone the boardwalk is quiet.

Francine, I haven't traveled much in my lifetime, but a few places come to mind. Los Cabos, Mexico is one of them, but I have to say that Hocking Hills in Ohio is my 'great escape'.

As you travel into Hocking county, the scenary takes you to places that appear to be untouched by modern society. You will pass by Amish family homes where the laundry is strung out on a line and a buggy sits in their gravel driveway.
Older folks sit on the front porch and wave or nod their head in your direction as you pass by. And log cabins abound! Both original buildings and new 'fancy' one ones too. Roads are tar patched and one lane each way. The folks around those parts call hills what most of us would call foothills.

When my children were younger I would prepare them for the 'whoa baby' bumps. Those are the hills and dips in the road that grab your tummy if you go faster than 40 mph! It was and is always a great escape to visit there!

South of France - My husband enjoy the region of Provence and the coastal area. One of the things we enjoy most is the slower pace of life there. Dinner is not a rushed fast meal, it is an event that lasts at least 2 hours if not more. We have had the pleasure of sharing discussing regional and national differences with people not just from France, but also England, Belgium, and people from other parts of the U.S. The meals are more like feasts, and we always leave wishing to bring the experience back to the US.

OK So Francine, this is weird. This is Michele Tozier again. So I LOVE Fort Bragg and MacKerricher. We go camping their every July and of course had I known you were going to be there, I would have found you. I would love to meet you some day because you have inspired me so much in my walk with the Lord. God has used you! Anyway, Fort Bragg is amazing. Anywhere on the Californnia coast in my opinion is God's country. My husband Paul and I go every year to Gualala, CA which is a little farther north. We stay at the Sea Cliff Lodge there. Every room has a beautiful view of the ocean and the river than runs through the town. Also each room has a fire place and a jacuzzi tub. It is a smaller town than Fort Bragg, but great for a get away from everything. I have had many amazing quiet times sitting in the room
watching enormous whales spurt out of the majestic ocean. It fills me with such awe and amazement everytime we visit. That's my favorite spot. :)

Ah, Francine, your sharing about Fort Bragg "takes me back there." Actually, I go back there in "spirit" quite often. I remember all the times I was at MacKerricher Park before dawn to catch the beauty of it...photos of the ocean pink as a soft baby's blanket, or orange and navy blue as if angry. And the Botanical Gardens! I lived but a few blocks away, and shot a roll of film at the gardens at least once a week. The downtown buildings are marvelous; I remember well meeting so many people when I took part in craft fairs at the "Old Company Store."

And then there's the crisis pregnancy center that's there largely because of you...still going. Hope you drove by when you were there. The building ended up looking so nice when the ministry finally began it's work in May of 2005.

Next time you visit, say hello to all its beauty for me.

Thank you for this wonderful entry...My favorite place to stay near Fort Bragg is the Jug Handle Creek Farm Nature Preserve. You can stay in the old Farm House, cabins or camp. It is very reasonably priced and offers organic gardening and hiking. I happened upon it through God's grace when I had a strong desire to go to Medocino and not much money for the trip.

I hope this information will bless you!

I thought you were going to say Fort Bragg, NC where we were stationed in the 70s because my dad was in the Air Force! What a surprise!LOL I loved The Atonement Child and have read it at least 3 times!

My favorite place in the world is Jamestown, TN, on the Cumberland plateau and home of Sgt. Alvin C. York of WWI fame.

The beauty of the place makes me weep!
