What can you do for the Dad who has everything?

I ran into this problem when Rick’s birthday rolled around this year.  After 40 years together, I couldn’t think of one thing he wanted or needed.  When I asked him what he would like for his birthday, he shrugged.  Neither of us needs more “stuff”.   He reads several books a week.  So who is to know which one he hasn’t yet read?  He has all the clothes he needs, and he’s still locked in the same style he wore back in high school.  Levis.  Hensley shirts.  OP shorts (when we can find them). I tried to imagine him in some of the low-hanging pants boys wear these days and had a good laugh.

My daughter, Shannon, came up with a wonderful idea on what to give the man who has everything:  write down 10-20 things you love about your husband.  I found a nice box and started making up small cards.  I didn’t stop with 20.  I didn’t stop until the box was too full to close.  And guess what?  The gift didn’t disappear into a drawer this year.  It sits on the bookshelf in our bedroom where it reminds him daily of how much I value and love him.  He’s got it in writing.

What works for birthdays will work very nicely for Father’s Day (even if you’ve already purchased a gift).

May good memories of your fathers be bountiful!

BEAUTIFUL IDEA!
i think i'll have to use this for the man in my life when the day comes!
thanks!

I guess it will be to renew and a refresh all that he's got, especially the things he loves most so that he'll appreciate them afresh and also know how much he is loved.

What a lovely idea!!

Francine, this idea of writing what you appreciate about someone came to me a few years ago when our youngest daughter turned 21. I made her a small album with admiring words I'd written about her as the Proverbs 21 woman. I'd call hers an 'why I love you' book.

A year later, one of my dearest friends turned 80. For her birthday I did the same thing--remembering why I enjoy her friendship. I included quips and quotes that are our favorites. I prompted her memory of things we'd secretly laughed about. So many things were mentioned that 40 years of friendship had given us. I included a small picture or two here and there in the album. And she dearly, dearly loves it. She says it sits on her coffee table where she looks through it almost daily. She's a more home bound widow now at the age of 85 and finds memories are so sweet. I'd call hers a 'let's remember together' book.

that's really something he won't forget anytime soon if ever. I'll try it soon.

Well done! Leuk ideetje.

Greetings/groeten: Aritha

I love this idea and plan to use it as my gift to my husband for our anniversary on Saturday! Thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful idea. Great for Dads or husbands too. I will definitely try it. Thankyou...

I had run out of ideas for my special man this year then remembered how he complained about back aches, stiff neck, and foot problems. So, I hired a massage therapist who comes to your home with a portable table and spends an hour getting all the kinks out. He loved it and was less shy about a stranger touching his bod in the privacy of his home. Best B-day gift he ever had!

Walmart carries Ocean Pacific (OP) brand now.

This is an inspired idea! Every way I look at it it's beautiful.

this is a great idea. Us, from The Sisterhood in Texas ( http://www.facebook.com/FrancineRivers#!/photo.php?pid=30974861&id=1449919831) all made a similar gesture to our dads.
We are all in the same Spirit.

Francine,

I love this idea and I am going to use the idea for my husband's upcoming birthday or possibly our upcoming anniversary. We will be celebrating 37 years of marriage in August.

Blessings, Beth
