Cats and Dogs
Dog and cats have taught me lessons about faith.
A dog loves unconditionally. A dog will accept discipline and hold no resentment. A dog follows its master and likes to be right at his or her feet. Our dog, Shabah, was always where we were – sometimes underfoot. When we went upstairs to bed, he planted himself right in the doorway. In the morning, he sat on my feet or Rick’s while we did our devotions together. He was easily trained because he wanted to please us. If he needed something, he let us know. “I have to go out.” “Please..please…please throw the tennis ball.” “Give me a scratch.” We could see it in his manner and his “puppy dog look” – and we responded.
I had numerous cats when I was a child, and cats are lovely, but independent. They don’t need to be with the “master” at all times. In fact, a cat seems to think it is the master of its own realm, especially if it has a self-dispensing food and water source – or lives outside and is a mouser. “Here, Kitty-Kitty” doesn’t always bring them running. Sometimes a cat will look at you with that “what do you want” expression. Sometimes they’ll find a nice quiet place and hide and ignore you. They like to be petted and stroked -- on their own terms. They come when they’re called – for food, milk. If there isn’t something in it for them, they’ll come when they please.
Don’t get me wrong. I love both dogs and cats.
But in faith – I want to be like a dog. I want to be at my Master’s feet. When I hear God’s still quiet voice, I want to come running, grinning from ear to ear, eager to do whatever He asks. I don’t want to be like a cat – thinking I can call the shots and do my own thing.

I agree! Have you ever heard of "Cat and Dog Theology"? You should get a copy of the book by Bob Sjogren and Gerald Robison on exactly this subject! I'm a teacher at a Christian school and we recently had Dr. Robison come and speak to our students during a spiritual emphasis week about the reasons we should have "dog theology". Check it out! I highly recommend it!
Oh yes! I believe that entirely, for, yeah, unfortunately I have doubts I don't want yet they still come. O how I wish to be like a dog, faithful, loyal and loving. I love my dog even though it needs some training, ha ha, but , yet he's always there for me. Thanks be unto God for his woderful gift to me!!!
Francine:
Three years ago, you accepted my invitation to speak to two Christian book clubs, in Santa Rosa, Ca, and my daugther in law and her oldest son joined us. It was a wonderful time. I am just finishing your latest book, Her Mother's Hope, and I love it. We have two cats and a dog and they are like children to us. We raised our five children, have 18 grandchildren & are blessed by them and our three latest additions. You are, by far, my favorite author and I highly recommend all of your books to readers who might see this. I hope to invite you to share again with our new church in Oakmont and will be in touch. I just discovered this blog and am new to this form of communication. May God Bless You!
